ACCC is a 501C3 charitable organization. Our all-volunteer organization is devoted to ending the homeless cat problem in Mobile with a proactive solution to this dilemma. Starving cats on Mobile’s streets are unnecessary, and the practice of trapping and killing them for 40 years has not worked . Make a difference and help us help them. Our mission: Providing community outreach and education on the value of spay and neuter using the TNR method. We strive to promote ethical treatment of stray and feral cats already living in our community (through no fault of their own.)
The definition and characteristics of a feral cat:
Homeless cats that are afraid of humans, have had little or no human contact, and cannot be easily approached or handled are referred to as “feral.” Feral cats exist in the shadows of every community due to “our” failure to spay and neuter. They are the offspring of once pet cats who have been dumped by people who did not make a responsible commitment to cats in their care. Killing the victims of such negligence should not be a consideration. For decades, the public has been apathetic regarding the plight of homeless animals. It is time to take responsibility for the tragedy we have created. Cats are silent sufferers that remain hidden when inured or sick. Street cats are forced to lead unimaginable lives; scavenging for food, water and shelter. Constant threats from other animals and cruel humans add to the dangers of life on the streets.
Why Implement TNR?
The success of a TNR approach for feral cats is well-documented and can improve their health and their environment in which they live. Thus improving our community as well. When stringently carried out, this approach prevents future generations of cats from being in the same situation. Sterilizing cats reduces yowling, fighting, and spraying, and sterilized cats spend less time and energy looking for mates, having kittens, and competing for territory. TNR save lives and tax dollars!!!!
What is TNR?
A group of feral/stray cats living together in one area is called a “colony.” Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is an effective, internationally recognized program developed to reduce, and eventually eliminate, feral cat colonies. Cats are trapped, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, ear tipped and returned to their original location then fed and watered by volunteers. Kittens and friendly adults are adopted into good homes.
What We (ACCC) do:
ACCC helps concerned, proactive people assist feral cats living in their neighborhood. We are here to answer questions about feral cats and TNR. ACCC also provides emotional, educational and financial support when available to all levels of caregivers, from the less experienced to highly knowledgeable to raise the standard of care for cats in their neighborhoods while reducing the feral population. Our volunteers go out to private residences, business and public areas upon request to trap cats in need of spay or neutering. We also assist low income families with transportation for their cats and dogs to be “fixed” as well.
Summary:
A brighter future for animal welfare depends on each and every one of us. The time to start is now and the buck stops here!! I did not create this problem but I am working towards developing a responsible solution and encourage others to do the same!!!!
