The Azalea City Cat Coalition was created in 2007 to alleviate the unnecessary suffering of stray and feral cats in Mobile Alabama. These cats are forced to lead unimaginable lives on the streets and wooded areas. This problem is the direct result of people’s failure to spay and neuter. Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is an effective, internationally recognized program that reduces, and eventually eliminates, feral cat colonies. Cats are trapped, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and returned to their original location. Kittens and friendly adults are adopted into good homes.
The success of a TNR approach for feral cats is well documented and is being implemented in cities and towns across the nation every day. This HUMANE alternative improves the health and behavior of existing cats in their environment in many ways. This method will help prevent future generations of cats forced to live outside in our community. Spaying and neutering prevents and curtails unpleasant behaviors associated with mating, such as yowling, fighting, and spraying. Fixed felines spend less time roaming looking for mates, and competing for territory.
Traditional, government agency-policies of trapping and killing cats have proven ineffective for the past 40 years!!! Most areas are over-run with high numbers of cats— and greater suffering of feral cats. Our well-planned program brings a new approach to an old problem. We save lives and tax dollars. TNR, in conjunction with public education and low-cost spay/neuter clinics, stabilizes the population and facilitates the eventual elimination of colonies of homeless cats.
We understand that the safest place for domestic cats is indoors. However, due to the fact that there are not enough suitable homes, cats are better left in their original environment. Managed colonies where food, water, shelter, and medical care are consistently provided pose no threat to public health or people.
